Prolong the life of your favourite briar with a little more care and attention. Take a look at those old discarded pipes discoloured, sour, damaged – some of them may easily justify the cost of a professional repair or refurbishment. I’ve been a pipe smoker since I did not undertake this particular review until I had smoked an entire tin of Westminster, 17 bowls in 15 different pipes. Personally, I will never review any tobacco that I haven’t smoked at least that much; I believe that this is the only way to learn enough about a tobacco to be able to form a relatively informed opinion. In general, it takes time to get to know a new tobacco.

Les has chosen a light brown to honey coloured stain which is very attractive to the eye. It would have been nice. This is a truly beautiful exemplar of notable quality, time honoured attention to tradition and detail, and of historical significance. I think the pics are reasonably good and show the pipe pretty accurately and at its best. Just in case though, I do need to mention that there is just the odd very shallow and very difficult to see, tiny and minor mark on the bowl — not readily visible to the naked eye, but apparent to me under magnification.
No, I promise that is not the case. They are extremely minor, but I must tell you what I see, magnified or otherwise.
Beginner’s Guide to Smoking a Pipe
Good reasons to smoke a pipe Writer: Liam Hetherington Pipe smoking is an art that takes years of dedication and thought you really need to know what you are smoking. The ritual of filling, lighting and smoking your pipe takes patience, don’t worry you will eventually keep it lit Over a period of time, you will start to develop your own techniques and rituals, you will soon start to feel as if you created the art of pipe smoking yourself!
Now there are plenty of reasons why you should start smoking a pipe but I have listed the most important below:
A straight (one or two lines) “London Made” stamping may be found on Comoy’s pipes from until about The Hallmarks on the band are for The “C” logo was first inlaid in the side of the mouthpiece around
Medium to Full Pleasant Ok so if you have tried this you may be aware of the McClelland tin smell, I won’t debate it here, other than I personally love it. You may also be aware that it is hard to keep lit, is a pain in the ass to rub out, is to wet to smoke out of the tin and can bite you hard if your not careful. I thought you gave it four stars? So first off let my start by letting you in on my ritual with this fine ‘baccy. I pop open a g tin and then rub the whole thing out as fine as I can make it, takes about a half hour.
After transforming the black and dark brown rubbery, leathery, jerky like flakes into something resembling crumbled up rubber I then let it sit out on a piece of wax paper for forty eight hours. I then pour back into the tin and let it sit a week to “rest”. Now that this stuff is at a smokable consistency, I gravity load a bowl and pack as one would normally, making a few slight adjustments for humidity, time of day, wind speed, ect This is one of the sweetest, tastiest flakes ever produced.

D Do specific brands of briar pipes provide correspondingly specific flavors? Does a Dunhill pipe, a Charatan, or a Chonowitsch, have a unique taste that separates that brand from all other briar pipes? Does an expensive brand, such as Castello, provide a superior level of smoking experience that is unattainable by more pedestrian brands such as Chacom or Stanwell? There are many pipe smokers and collectors who firmly believe that the answer to these questions is yes.
Others only partially subscribe.
Extraordinare was a designation for pipes that were made to standard Comoy shapes, but were somewhat larger in one respect or another. For instance, a typical Extraordinare is a Canadian with a longer than usual shank.
Posted on 10 September, by Marcus Like the sensory memories of many a boy, mine started at the heels of my father. No dubbin-soaked football, nor linseed-oiled cricket bat for me. My father was an artist, so linseed oil featured in the smell-library of memory but, combined with oil paint and turpentine and, walking at waist height alongside, the overriding aroma was the smell of damp Harris Tweed jacket and a pocket full of pipe.
Exterior pocket left, however, was solely devoted to pipe smoking. Serviceable pipes, separated from their classier counterparts by a small sand-pit or a less than perfect grain. Once, I found a sprung lid to place on the bowl for windy conditions. Or, if the tobacco had been bought loose from Bewlays, an oilskin roll. Of the tins, there were standard round 1oz, in deeper and shallower versions. The small rectangular flake tin, and the large 2oz rectangular, ready rubbed.
In short, just as there was a set of spanners for the Morris Minor, there was a toolkit that went into the left hand pocket that enabled the art of pipe smoking. The paraphernalia, maintenance and ritual were of course what first drew me to the art, as much as the soothing smoke itself. Of course, they never spoke about what they had seen, but there was a sense that their pipes had seen them through.

I quickly realised that there was very little information on the make generally, and often the information published was inaccurate. These, together with other dated examples I have seen and original catalogues have enabled me to considerably flesh out some of the previously published facts. I have also been fortunate to have had several long discussions with Jacques Cole who was at St. I am also fortunate to have a history of the company written by Louis Comoy in the s and believe that the history given as an introduction is as definitive as possible.
Introduction Francois Comoy and his brothers started making pipes probably clays, boxwood and beech in in the small monastic town of Saint-Claude in eastern France.
The Comoy pipe is historically significant. François Comoy in Saint Claude, France originally founded the company in the early ‘s, as a manufacturer of clay pipes.
History History The history of S. Frank, as it exists today, is a combination of some of the biggest names in pipe making from the early part of the 20th. Sometime before , the Dinwoodie had been discontinued and the Kaywoodie name was beginning to be used on an extensive line of pipes that ultimately would be the name of the company. The origin of the name Kaywoodie is a combination of the K from Kaufman and wood, as in briar. Not much is known of the original KBB company other than it was started in by the German born Kaufman brothers when they opened a small pipe shop in the Bowery section of New York City.
In the back room of this shop, they made their first pipes.
